How Often to Clean Gutters in Fresno

Clean Fresno gutters at least once a year, in autumn, after the leaves drop and before the first winter storm. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Fresno Yosemite International Airport put 5.88 of the year's 10.99 inches of precipitation in the winter season, so the trough has to be clear when that water arrives. Here is the schedule, what changes it, and what each visit should check.

The Short Answer

Once a year in autumn is the minimum. A house under heavy trees needs a second visit in spring. A house with no trees near the roof can run on the autumn cleaning alone, with a check from the ground after each big storm. We set the schedule on the first visit, from the roof, the trees and what we find in the trough.

What Fresno's Seasons Do to a Gutter

The pattern is the same every year. NOAA's normals put precipitation at 1.48 inches in autumn, 5.88 inches in winter, 3.36 inches in spring and 0.27 inches in summer. Summer averages a high of 95.2°F, and the National Weather Service in Hanford lists 69 days at or above 100°F in Fresno in 2021, the most in its record.

That produces three stages. In summer there is almost no rain, so debris that lands in the trough dries and stays. In autumn the leaves come down on top of it. In winter the first storm wets the whole pile at once and packs it against the downspout outlet, and the trough overflows onto the fascia and the soil at the foundation. The cleaning belongs between the second stage and the third.

Why Autumn

An autumn cleaning clears the summer's debris and the fallen leaves in one visit. A cleaning in midsummer is too early, because leaves and seed pods keep landing afterward. A cleaning in midwinter is too late, because the first storms have already packed the trough. Autumn, after the leaves are down and before the rain, is the window that matches the weather.

When a Second Visit Makes Sense

A second visit in spring is for houses where something keeps dropping into the trough. Heavy trees over the roof, blossom drop, and a roofline that collects windblown debris all fill the trough again after the winter. A spring visit also catches what the storms moved: a section that sagged under the weight of wet debris, a hanger that pulled loose, a joint that opened. Gutter repair in Fresno covers what we fix when the check finds one.

What Each Cleaning Should Check

A cleaning is more than removing debris. Each visit should cover:

  • the trough, including the corners and the ends
  • each downspout, flushed to its outlet
  • the hangers, for loose or missing ones
  • the joints and end caps, for open sealant
  • where each downspout discharges, and whether it needs an extension
  • the fascia behind the run, for soft or stained boards

A trough that is clean but sagging, or a downspout that is flushed but dumps beside the foundation, is still a failing gutter.

Fire Season and the Clean-Gutter Rule

CAL FIRE's home-hardening guidance says to keep the roof clear of debris and to "clean gutters regularly and install noncombustible gutter covers on gutters." It states that gutters without a cover can accumulate debris and become highly susceptible to embers and fire. Dry leaves that sit in a trough all summer are the case that guidance describes, which is another reason the cleaning belongs before the dry season peaks, not after it. Gutter guards and wildfire embers in Fresno covers the guidance in full.

What a Guard Changes

A gutter guard cuts the amount of debris that reaches the trough, so the cleaning schedule can stretch. It does not remove it. Fine grit and seed heads can settle on the surface of some guards, and the run underneath still needs a check for loose hangers and open joints. We check a guarded run after the first season and tell you how often it needs a visit. Gutter guards in Fresno covers the styles and the cost ranges.

What the Cleaning Costs

Fixr gives a national range of $200 to $400 per home, with a $300 average, updated January 31, 2025. HomeGuide gives $100 to $250 per job, with a $175 average, in an article dated November 7, 2025. Those are national averages, not Fresno quotes. Cleaning once a year costs a fraction of the repair that a clogged run causes, and a price for your house comes from an on-site look.
